Summer is a great time to get away – to the beach, the woods, or just a suburban backyard – but that means it is also time to take precautions against ticks and the diseases they carry. In New York City and the rest of the nation, the most common is Lyme disease, which is transmitted by the bite of an infected blacklegged tick. Thankfully, we can all take steps to avoid being exposed to Lyme disease, and if those fail, there are highly effective treatments. “If you are spending time in a tick-friendly environment, doing a diligent, full-body check is the single most important thing you can do to prevent Lyme disease: take off the clothing you wore outside, check it closely and then inspect yourself,” said Jeffrey Gumprecht, MD, associate clinical professor of medicine and infectious diseases at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Looking to the future, a group at Mount Sinai runs a project called LymeMIND that is gathering data from around the world in the search for targeted "precision medicine" treatments for Lyme disease.
