HIV-positive women are more likely than HIV-negative women to become infected with human papillomavirus (HPV) and to have that infection progress to high-grade lesions, a new report finds. "This study proves without a doubt that the burden of HPV infection in HIV-positive women is a serious global health issue, "said Antonio Urbina, MD, an associate professor of infectious disease at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. "Resources are desperately needed to not only establish infrastructure for targeted screening programs but to provide access to HPV vaccination to this highly vulnerable population." Cervical cancer-preventing vaccines are very safe, very effective and now available in low-resource settings at low cost.
