"Stress Marker In Infant Urine May Predict Asthma" - Salynn Boyles
Alison Lee, MD, assistant professor of medicine, pulmonary, critical care at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and colleagues followed 736 mothers and their children from before birth to age 6 years. The study expands on prior research showing that lower income, ethnically mixed, urban populations as a group have more life stressors and more air pollution exposures, and that exposure to both in utero impacts respiratory health. "Our data are the first to show that when they occur together, the effect is multiplied," said Dr. Lee, adding that it is not clear why boys appeared to be more vulnerable than girls.
