Musculoskeletal disorders, such as joint fractures, carpal tunnel syndrome and arthritis, cost U.S. employers more than any other health condition, according to the Northeast Business Group on Health.  Some self-insured entities are working out their own bundled-payment deals with providers. For instance, the union 32BJ SEIU recently partnered with Mount Sinai Health System and Anthem, the third-party administrator of its health plan, to develop a bundled-payment arrangement for the entire episode of care surrounding a joint replacement. Although it required significant patient outreach and education to union members to encourage interest in the program, it reduced patients' average length of stay in the hospital, according to the report.
