Mahogany Phillips thought her gender confirmation surgery would never be covered by insurance, but when she had surgery in September 2016 at the Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery at Mount Sinai, the procedure was covered under her plan. Increasingly, insurance plans are covering transgender-specific care. “So much of what transgender people have to do is argue for the validity of their own existence,” says Zil Garner Goldstein, FNP-BC, program director of the Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery at Mount Sinai. “Explain why it’s important for them to transition, why we need to have these medical and surgical therapies in order to live our lives.”
