William M Byne, MD, PhD Email William Byne
- ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR | Psychiatry
After completing psychiatric residency he practiced psychiatry at the Columbia Center for Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Mental Health and in private practice prior to establishing his laboratory at Mount Sinai in 1995. In addition to engaging in research and clinical care he has developed curricula for medical students, residents and clinical fellows in the culturally competent delivery of healthcare to sexual minorities. He was among the first physicians to formally serve as an advisor to the Intersex Society of North America, a role he played throughout the history of the organization. As a member of the Consortium for Disorders of Sex Development, he contributed to Clinical Guidelines for the Management of Disorders of Sex Development in Childhood and the companion volume Handbook for Parents.
Dr. Byne chaired the American Psychiatric Association’s (APA) Task Force on the Treatment of Gender Identity Disorder. The Task Force Report, published in 2012, concluded that sufficient evidence exists to support production, by the APA, of clinical recommendations for psychiatrists who assess or treat children, adolescents and adults who experience Gender Dysphoria, including those with disorders of sex development. The Report also recommended that the APA issue position statements supporting the medical necessity of treatments for Gender Dysphoria and opposing discrimination on the basis of gender variance. These position statements have now been issued. Dr. Byne is currently chair of an APA work group under the Committee on Research and Quality Care that is charged with implementation of the recommendations of the Task Force.
Dr. Byne recently co-edited, Treatment of Transgender Children and Adolescents. This volume provides authoritative and detailed descriptions of the various treatment goals as well as approaches to the treatment of minors with Gender Dysphoria. Among its goals is assisting parents and other primary caregivers who face the dilemma of treatment selection for minors intheir care. Dr. Byne’s current projects include working with the Veterans Health Administration at local, regional and national levels to train VA staff in the provision of culturally competent healthcare to transgender veterans as required by VHA Directive 2011-024, Providing Health Care for Transgender and Intersex Veterans. He is a member of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health and on the editorial boards of The Journal of Homosexuality, The Journal of Gay and Lesbian Mental Health, and editor-in-chief of LGBT Health.
