Biography

Dr. Rachel Wellner received her undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College in 1997, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa.  She expressed an early interest in international health care and has set up many programs around the world to aide the underserved.  She received her medical degree from The University of Connecticut School of Medicine and a Masters in Public Health from the Joseph L. Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University.  During her time at Columbia, she also pursued research activities, which culminated in the publication of her textbook, Aging, Heart Disease and Its Management.  She next went on to pursue her surgical training at The Mount Sinai School of Medicine, receiving various teaching awards.  She also helped to establish a clinical rotation in an underserved region of the Dominican Republic.  Her interest in oncology developed during her residency, at which point she decided to pursue subspecialty training in breast disease s, which combines her interest in the humanities, compassionate delivery of health care, clinical medicine, and investigational science.  She is currently editing a review book on breast diseases.  She is also investigating how to improve surgical incisions in order to combine sound oncologic outcomes with improved patient satisfaction.  Finally, she is currently investigating methodology of evaluating surgical margins to lower re-operation rates.
