Dr. Maria Skamagas completed her residency training in Internal Medicine and fellowship training in Endocrinology at the Mount Sinai Hospital. She was Chief Fellow during her Endocrinology training. Dr. Skamagas is currently an Assistant Professor in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Bone Disease. Her clinical interests include type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus, bone diseases, adrenal disorders, female reproductive disorders, polycystic ovary syndrome, and pituitary disease.
Dr. Skamagas is the Director of the Diabetes Clinic at the Mount Sinai Hospital. She has expertise in managing complicated diabetes cases, teaching Endocrine fellows in training, and improving the overall quality of care of diabetes in the clinic and hospital settings. She is actively involved in medical education of housestaff and medical staff in diabetes and other endocrine diseases. She is certified in clinical densitometry and interprets bone density studies in the evaluation of osteoporosis.
Dr. Skamagas is a co-investigator in an NIH funded randomized control trial examining Vitamin D Treatment in HIV/AIDS. She is also the principal investigator in a study looking at the prevalence of valvular heart disease in patients taking cabergoline to treat hyperprolactinemia.
