Joanna Chikwe, MD is the inaugural Chairman of the newly established Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at Mount Sinai St. Luke's.
Dr. Chikwe first joined The Mount Sinai Hospital in 2006 as Mount Sinai's first female cardiac surgeon. She is Professor of Cardiovascular Surgery at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and serves as Program Director of the Thoracic Surgery Residents and Advanced Fellowship Programs for the Mount Sinai Health System.
She specializes in using minimally invasive cardiac surgery techniques to reduce post-operative discomfort, speed recovery and improve cosmetic appearance of incisions after surgery.
Dr. Chikwe is one of a handful of US surgeons with advanced training in both reconstructive valve surgery and minimally invasive cardiac surgery techniques such as off-pump, video and robotic-assisted surgery. She works closely with a dedicated plastic surgery and anesthesiology team with a specialist interest in minimally invasive cardiac surgery. Dr. Chikwe employs valve repair to preserve natural valve tissue wherever possible, as well as off-pump surgery to avoid cardiopulmonary bypass for selected coronary bypass procedures.
Dr. Chikwe received her medical degree from Oxford University. She completed her general surgery residency at Oxford and Cambridge, followed by research into cardiac transplantation for which she received a Masters degree from Cambridge University.
Dr. Joanna Chikwe completed her residency in cardiothoracic surgery on the Royal Brompton Hospital rotation where she gained expertise in minimally invasive surgery, including two years specializing in off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting and video assisted and robotic cardiac surgery. She successfully completed a two year advanced fellowship under Dr David Adams focusing on mitral valve repair and aortic reconstruction at Mount Sinai Medical Center.
Joanna has published widely in the field of cardiac surgery. She is the author of three key surgical textbooks, including Cardiothoracic Surgery in the Oxford Specialist series; and she has published several book chapters and articles on minimally invasive surgery. Joanna is also active in clinical research, authoring over fifty scientific articles and abstracts published in peer-reviewed journals or presented at international scientific meetings. Her international awards include a Fulbright Award and she is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons.

Physicians and scientists on the faculty of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai often interact with pharmaceutical, device and biotechnology companies to improve patient care, develop new therapies and achieve scientific breakthroughs. In order to promote an ethical and transparent environment for conducting research, providing clinical care and teaching, Mount Sinai requires that salaried faculty inform the School of their relationships with such companies.
Dr. Chikwe has not yet completed reporting of Industry relationships.
Mount Sinai's faculty policies relating to faculty collaboration with industry are posted on our website. Patients may wish to ask their physician about the activities they perform for companies.
Physicians who provide services at hospitals and facilities in the Mount Sinai Health System might not participate in the same health plans as those Mount Sinai hospitals and facilities (even if the physicians are employed or contracted by those hospitals or facilities).
Information regarding insurance participation and billing by this physician may be found on this page, and can also be obtained by contacting this provider directly. Because physicians insurance participation can change, the insurance information on this page may not always be up-to-date. Please contact this physician directly to obtain the most up-to-date insurance information.
Insurance and health plan networks that the various Mount Sinai Health System hospitals and facilities participate in can be found on the Mount Sinai Health System website.
