Biography

Dr. Ian Holzman received his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh and he completed his pediatric training at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. He did a fellowship in neonatology at the University of Colorado and then was on the neonatal faculty at the University of Pittsburgh prior to coming to  Mount Sinai  to become the Chief of Newborn Medicine and Professor of Pediatrics, Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences. He presently serves as the Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs in the Department of Pediatrics.  Among other responsibilities, Dr. Holzman is the President of the Independent Physicians Organization, the Chair of the Ethics Committee and the Laboratory Committee, and a member of the Board of Governors of the faculty Practice Association and the Children’s Center Foundation.  He also serves on the Hospital Professionalism Committee, the Credentials Committee, the Appointments and Promotions Committee and various Quality Assurance Committees.

Dr. Holzman’s research interests include understanding the etiology of necrotizing enterocolitis, examining treatment strategies for breathing problems in newborns and nutritional practices in the neonatal intensive care unit.  He also works in the area of bioethics with a special interest in problems related to newborns and in surrogate decision-making.
