Heidi Allison Bender, Ph.D. is Director of Neuropsychological Services at The Mount Sinai Center for Cognitive Health and Assistant Professor of Neurology and Psychiatry within the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
Dr. Bender graduated from New York University with both her Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees in Psychology. She then received two additional Masters degrees and a Ph.D. from the Neuropsychology Subprogram within The Graduate Center, City University of New York, based at Queens College. Upon completion of her Ph.D., Dr. Bender undertook a Clinical Internship at The Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine at New York University Medical Center. She subsequently underwent three additional years of advanced clinical and research training in Clinical Neuropsychology at New York University School of Medicine’s Comprehensive Epilepsy Center. During her time at NYU's Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, Dr. Bender was the recipient of a highly competitive, individual grant, the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (F32), under the auspices of the National Institutes of Health. This grant award provided Dr. Bender with the support necessary to launch her innovative and unique programmatic line of research aimed at refining diagnostic decision making for candidates for epilepsy surgery, work that she continues to build upon through present day.
An accomplished researcher in the fields of epilepsy, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, and cross-cultural neuropsychology, Dr. Bender has been an invited lecturer throughout the United States and abroad on these and other topics. Moreover, Dr. Bender has published in over 30 peer-reviewed manuscripts in national and international scientific journals and scientific volumes.
In addition, Dr. Bender has been the recipient of multiple independent research grants and training awards from the Epilepsy Foundation of America, American Psychological Association, New York State Psychological Association–Neuropsychology Division, and the Agency for Research Healthcare and Quality. Moreover, she is currently a co-Investigator and valued collaborator on several federally-funded grants aimed at improving the diagnostic parameters, treatment regimens, and overall quality of care provided to adults and children with a wide variety of neurological challenges.
Owing to her long-standing interest in the neuropsychological assessment of immigrant populations, Dr. Bender is currently the co-Chair of New York Neuropsychology Group’s Bilingual Task Force. Additionally, she is a Founding Member of two other consortia dedicated to reducing disparities in the quality of healthcare provided to non-native English speakers via research, community outreach and advocacy.
Additionally, Dr. Bender is Director of Neuropsychology Training within The Mount Sinai Center for Cognitive Health. Through this training program, Dr. Bender provides pre- and post-doctoral students with the opportunity to receive supervised clinical and research experiences caring for adults and children with a variety of neuromedical and psychiatric disorders.
