Biography
Dr. Bret Nelson is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and the the Director of the Emergency Medicine Ultrasound Division. He has lectured throughout the world on the use of point-of-care ultrasound to aid medical decision-making and improve patient safety. He is an active participant in several organizations devoted to enhancing clinical utility of ultrasound technology, including the World Interactive Network Focused on Critical Ultrasound (WINFOCUS), the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM), as well as the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP)'s Ultrasound Section. He is currently the Secretary of AIUM's Emergency and Critical Care Ultrasound community of practice, and was among the authors of ACEP's 2008 Emergency Ultrasound Guidelines.
Dr. Nelson's research interests include ultrasound, medical education, and airway management. He is coauthor of The Manual of Emergency and Critical Care Ultrasound and Emergency Medicine Oral Board Review Illustrated (Cambridge University Press). He is a member of the national faculty of The Difficult Airway Course and has a strong interest in emergency airway management.

Emergency Ultrasound
Ongoing clinical research includes the use of portable ultrasound in out-of-hospital and resource poor environments as well as multimodal approaches to ultrasound education. In addition, Dr. Nelson is participating in multicenter research on ultrasound use in cardiac arrest, penetrating trauma, and nerve block applications.
