Biography
For more than 40 years, Dr. Barry Stimmel has been committed to patient care and research at Mount Sinai in the fields of Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Medical Education, and Addiction Medicine. He is Dean Emeritus for Medical Education, Ombudsperson, Katherine and Clifford Goldsmith Professor of Medicine (Cardiology) at MSSM. He is also an active member of the Zena and Michael A. Wiener Cardiovascular Institute at The Mount Sinai Medical Center.
Appointed to the position of Assistant Dean of Admissions and Student Affairs immediately upon completion of his residency training, Dr. Stimmel played a key role in coordinating and developing an outstanding medical school curriculum. As Dean for Graduate Medical Education (1996-2008), he continued his commitment to Medical Education by developing the Consortium for Graduate Medical Education at Mount Sinai. Comprised of 11 institutions and over 1,800 house staff officers, it is one of the largest consortia of its kind in the United States.
In 1970, Dr. Stimmel established Mount Sinai's Narcotics Rehabilitation Center (serving as Executive Director from 1975-2008), the first program in New York City to use methadone solely in an ambulatory care setting. Prior to its closure in 2007, the NRC treated over 30,000 heroin users, serving as a model multidisciplinary treatment program for the State of New York. Nationally and internationally known for his treatment and study of heroin dependency, Dr. Stimmel has served on the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy Committee of Physicians for National Drug Control Strategy.
Dr. Stimmel is the author of 7 books, numerous book chapters, and over 200 scientific papers. He is the founding editor of the quarterly, peer-reviewed Journal of Addictive Diseases. In addition to his extensive publications, he has served on the boards of directors of several organizations, including the Society of Internal Medicine of the County of New York, the American Society of Addiction Medicine, the American Board of Addiction Medicine, and Union Settlement Association.
