Biography

    Dr. Alexis Demopoulos is Assistant Professor of Medicine, Neurosurgery,
    and Neurology, and directs medical Neuro-Oncology at Mount Sinai. He
    treats adults with primary brain tumors (meningiomas and gliomas,
    including astrocytoma, glioblastoma, oligodendroglioma, and ependymoma),
    brain metastases from cancer, neurologic complications of cancer, and
    leptomeningeal disease - a condition where tumor cells gain access to
    the cerebrospinal fluid, travel to distant sites, settle and grow.

    After his MD at Northwestern University in Chicago, Dr. Demopoulos
    completed a research fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer
    Center (MSKCC) in 1997. In 2002, he was awarded the Charles H. Revson
    Fellowship for Biomedical Research for the study of therapeutic glioma
    vaccines. He completed a Neurology residency at Cornell - New York
    Presbyterian Hospital and a Neurologic Oncology clinical fellowship at
    Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He was on staff at Memorial
    Sloan-Kettering until 2005, when he was appointed the Director of
    Neuro-Oncology for the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health Care System
    at Manhasset, NY. In June, 2009 he moved to the Mount Sinai Medical
    Center to contribute to the effort in adult brain tumor therapy,
    research, and clinical trials.

    Dr. Demopoulos's efforts at Mount Sinai are directed towards an
    integrative treatment of brain tumors, the neurologic complications of
    cancer, and leptomeningeal disease. Through interdisciplinary
    collaborations, he conducts clinical trials and develops translational
    studies in tumor biology to identify the next possible targets for novel
    therapeutics.
