Overview
The Mount Sinai Rehabilitation Center offers a Transition to Fitness Program designed for individuals with or without disabilities who are not currently undergoing physical therapy treatment or alternatively, who have recently been discharged from physical therapy treatment or functional electronic stimulation (FES). The program provides individuals an opportunity to improve their own cardiovascular health, body strength, and flexibility, as well as physical and social well-being. Clients receive a personalized exercise program, designed by a physical therapist in a motivating and supervised environment. The ultimate goal of the program is for the client to transition to their own independent fitness program.
The program consists of the following components: FES-induced lower extremity ergometry and upper and lower body strengthening, flexibility, balance, coordination, and aerobic conditioning. The FES program is a unique program designed for people with spinal cord injuries. It allows the participant the opportunity to actively exercise their legs on a cycle ergometer under computerized electrical stimulation. Other equipment includes a Cybex cable column, four-station Freedom Machine, free weights, upper body ergometer, bicycles, treadmills, stairclimbers, and mat areas for stretching.
-
Potential clients must first obtain medical clearance from a doctor along with a written referral.
-
A physical therapist will determine the client's fitness profile and abilities and tailor an exercise program to meet the specific fitness goals. Any restrictions or limitations will be determined and the program can be modified appropriately.
-
Each session is supervised to ensure safe and proper technique, allow for advancement of the individual's exercise program, and assist with weight set-up and spotting.
