Overview
The Mount Sinai Rehabilitative Center Outpatient Neuromuscular Services utilizes an interdisciplinary approach to treat a wide variety of patients affected by various neuromuscular disorders that may include traumatic and non-traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, and motor neuron diseases - among many others. Physiatrists, physical and occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, and neuropsychologists are all part of the comprehensive team whose goal is to maximize the functional capabilities of the patient.
Upon receiving a physician's referral, patients are provided with the highest level of care that often begins with a comprehensive evaluation. Our state-of-the-art diagnostic modalities include the following tests, among others:
-
Electromyography and nerve conduction studies. These tests help to distinguish primary disorders of the muscles themselves from symptomatic muscle weakness caused by neurologic disorders.
Following evaluation, the patient and his/her therapist set functional goals designed to best achieve the patient’s long term goals. Patients have full access to state-of-the-art rehabilitative equipment as well as the medical expertise of Mount Sinai’s clinical specialists. Rehabilitative care at the Neuromuscular Program integrates manual therapy and neuromuscular reeducation techniques to facilitate recovery towards normal joint motion and maximize neurological and muscle function. Care is always provided in close consultation with the patient’s referring physician, and progress is reevaluated on a monthly basis.
