Overview

The Mount Sinai Rehabilitation Center offers a unique program for patients suffering from various spinal disorders. The Back School Program is conducted in a group setting with close instruction and supervision by one of our skilled clinicians. After evaluation by your primary therapist, it may be determined that the Back School is appropriate for you.

  • The Back School is a 90-minute session, conducted in a small group setting of approximately 6 to 10 patients. Depending on class size, one or two skilled clinicians will instruct the class.
  • This program provides patients with an understanding of back anatomy and spinal mechanics.
  • The Back School promotes patient responsibility of back management and associated symptoms.
  • The program starts with a basic overview of back and spine anatomy. Patients are instructed in correct postures in various positions of daily living (i.e., sitting, sleeping, and standing).
  • Work ergonomics are addressed and tailored to each patient's profession.
  • Patients are instructed in correct back mechanics during squatting, lifting, and various movement activities such as cleaning, carrying, dressing, and recreation.
  • Back School is also offered in Spanish.

Back School gives patients the skills they need to effectively cope with existing back pain and to avoid most cases of re-injury.
