Maudsley Family Therapy
Maudsley Family-based therapy is a highly effective treatment traditionally used with families of adolescents with anorexia nervosa. It is now being used successfully among adolescents with bulimia nervosa as well.
The approach emphasizes the family as a vital component in the treatment process, versus the emotional roots of the disorder. Other than cases where the patient is in immediate medical danger, this treatment is administered on an outpatient basis and therefore prevents or limits the need for hospitalization.
The success of family-based treatment in anorexia nervosa is reflected in research demonstrating resolution of self-starvation, high retention rates, and impressively low relapse rates over time.
