While the number of Americans diagnosed with breast and prostate cancer continues to drop, the incidence of thyroid cancer is on the rise—especially in women above the age of 45. "The thyroid is an endocrine gland located below the Adam’s apple," says Dr. William Inabnet, from Mount Sinai. "It’s responsible for producing hormones that help the body regulate metabolism." There are about 47,000 new cases of thyroid cancer diagnosed a year. Thyroid nodules are lumps or clusters of thyroid cells that have followed an abnormal growth pattern.
