Bloomberg – Dr. James Gladstone: “Seahawks Wide Receiver Percy Harvin Says He’ll Need Hip Surgery”

New York, NY
 – July 31, 2013  ––

Seattle Seahawk wide receiver Percy Harvin said he’ll need surgery on his hip. Harvin, a 2009 first-round draft pick who also has five career kickoff returns for touchdowns, made the announcement yesterday after receiving a second opinion from a hip specialist on the slight tear in his labrum. Harvin may require as little as two months of rehabilitation if the surgery involves trimming soft tissue around the hip socket and up to three to four months for recovery if it needs to be repaired, according to James Gladstone, MD, an orthopedic surgeon and co-chief of sports medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. The hip surgery performed in January on Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees required a lengthier rehab because it involved the shaving of bone and not simply repairing the soft tissue, Dr. Gladstone said.
