A Second Chance at Life: Laureen
March 22, 2012
Laureen Gerzack is an example of the highly specialized, complicated cases typically seen and treated at Mount Sinai. Over the years, Laureen’s kidneys had been badly damaged by diabetes. It came to a point where complications caused by diabetes prevented Laureen from having life-saving dialysis. She needed a transplant or she would die. However, other hospitals viewed her case as surgically too risky to attempt a transplant. Here, Laureen and her surgeon Michael J. Goldstein, Director of Renal and Pancreatic Transplantation at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York and Medical Director of the New York Organ Donor Network, tell the story of Laureen’s journey to Mount Sinai and her successful transplant surgery.
