Team RMTI Walks to Fight Liver Disease
Participants raise nearly $4,000 in annual event
On June 5, 2011 a team from the Recanati/Miller Transplantation Institute (RMTI) of The Mount Sinai Medical Center participated in the American Liver Foundation’s annual Liver Life Walk in New York City. This year, Team RMTI was comprised of more than 30 walkers who combined to raise almost $4,000—the sixth highest total out of the 47 registered teams! The walk took place in scenic Battery Park, located near the southern tip of Manhattan.
The sponsor of the walk, the American Liver Foundation (ALF), was founded in 1976 and is the nation’s leading nonprofit organization devoted to promoting liver health and disease management. It maintains an ultimate goal of a world without liver disease and pursues that end through a number of different pathways. These include research to improve treatment and discover cures, education to detect liver disease early—and in some cases prevent it altogether, and advocacy on the behalf of patients and their families.
All of the ALF’s pursuits benefit significantly from the money that is raised by the Liver Life Walk. The Walk is the ALF’s largest annual fundraising event. It achieves a national scale, with more than 25 cities hosting a walk in 2011 and nearly 20,000 people participating. The Liver Life Walk’s motto—Walk for Fun…Walk for Life!—is certainly an appropriate description for what walkers do across the country in support of the nearly 30 million Americans living with liver disease.
While those interested in participating in the Liver Life Walk in New York City will have to wait until next year to do so, Team RMTI will be participating in a similar event in the more immediate future—the National Kidney Foundation’s annual Kidney Walk in New York City. The event aims to raise money in support of those living with kidney disease, and will take place on October 16, 2011 at South Street Seaport in Manhattan. Team RMTI welcomes involvement in any and all forms, be it by walking or making a modest donation. More information about the Kidney Walk can be obtained by visiting TeamRMTI - NKF Walk2011.
