After Your Endoscopy
Your doctor will meet with you to discuss your test results and any necessary follow-up or treatment. Because of the medication used for sedation, you may not remember your conversation with your doctor. If you like, we can discuss the test results with a family member or friend who is with you, if you specify that they be involved.
- Follow-up care instructions: The Mount Sinai nursing staff will provide you with detailed written instructions regarding your follow-up care. This may include information about diagnosis, medications, discomfort, bleeding, diet, and your follow-up appointment with the physician.
- Transportation home: To drive a car with sedative medication still in your system is illegal and considered driving under the influence of drugs (DUI), a punishable offense. A family member or friend must accompany you to the Endoscopy Suite and accompany you home.
- If possible, you should choose someone with whom your physician can discuss the results of your test. We also request that your driver remain at or near the Endoscopy Suite during your stay.
- An adult must take you home. You will NOT be able to drive. If you travel by public transportation, you will still need an adult to ride home with you. If you come to the Endoscopy Suite for registration without an adult who will be accompanying you home, your test will have to be rescheduled.
Reminder: Sedatives will affect your judgment and reflexes for the rest of the day. You should not drive or operate machinery until at least 24 hours after the procedure.
The Mount Sinai Endoscopy unit provides these criteria with your safety in mind.
Once you are home: If problems arise when you return home, please call your physician at the telephone number provided with your discharge instructions. It is recommended that a responsible person remain with you for the rest of the day.
Maintaining Quality Care
Our doctors and staff are very interested in your opinion about your Endoscopy Suite experience.
As a part of Mount Sinai's ongoing goal of providing quality care, you may be asked to fill out a Patient Satisfaction Survey form.
Please take a few minutes to complete this survey and mail it back to us. We monitor the results and make improvements based upon your feedback.
