Preparing for Your Endoscopy

Patient Questionnaire:

  • The information here is provided to help you get ready for your procedure, but we also need to get ready for you. By providing us with information about your health before your visit, we can make sure we are prepared to provide you with the appropriate care in the most efficient manner when you arrive. For this reason, we ask that you first take a few minutes to complete the following health questionnaire and fax it to 212-659-8328 two days before your visit.
  • Once you have completed the questionnaire, please review the information here to learn more about how to prepare and what to expect before, during, and after your procedure.
Eating and Drinking Prior to Your Procedure:
  • For your doctor to obtain the best results from your endoscopy, your stomach should be completely empty. Therefore, you should refrain from eating and drinking approximately 8 hours before the examination.
  • Depending on the time of day that your test is scheduled, our staff will tell you when to stop eating and drinking.
The Colonoscopy "Prep":
  • For colonoscopy, you will need to take a prep (preparation) to clean out the colon. A member of our team will contact you with specific instructions about your preparation once your procedure is scheduled.
Medications:
  • Medications may need to be adjusted or temporarily avoided. Be sure to inform your doctor beforehand of all your current medications. If you're taking aspirin, Plavix, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (Advil, Motrin, etc.), blood thinners (Coumadin, Heparin), insulin, or other prescribed or over-the-counter medications, these should be brought to your doctor's attention as soon as possible.
Your Medical History:
  • If you require antibiotics prior to undergoing dental procedures, or have allergies to medications -- tell your doctor.
  • If you have any major diseases, such as heart or lung disease, that may require special attention during the procedure, discuss this with your doctor or with the intake interviewer.
Clothing and Valuables:
  • Wear comfortable clothing that is easily removed. You will change into a patient gown before the examination. Avoid girdles, pantyhose, and tight-fitting garments.
  • While we can assure your comfort and safety while you are our patient, we ask that you leave your valuables at home or in possession of the person who has accompanied you to Mount Sinai. However, whatever valuables you do take with you will be placed inside a sealed bag and kept with you throughout the procedure.
