For those of us who don’t want the sun’s after-effects of wrinkles, brown spots, pre-cancerous and cancerous skin conditions, following sun protection advice can make all the difference. There are a lot of myths about sun exposure. Sun protection is the most important way to prevent skin cancers and cosmetic photo damage to the skin. Use a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher. Look for the words broad spectrum, which indicates protection against both UVB and UVA light. “Most people are not doing that,” said Joshua Zeichner, MD, of The Mount Sinai Medical Center. “If you are not using as much as you should be using, the SPF value is diluted out.” In addition to titanium or zinc, look for sunscreens with avobenzone or ecamsule, says Dr. Zeichner.”
