Inpatient Medicine

The role of the social worker on the inpatient medical units reflects both the philosophy of the social work profession and that of the hospital. In a collaborative effort with the medical staff and other hospital personnel, social work services focus on total patient care which includes the physical, emotional, and social needs of each individual and family. Emphasizing the individual’s strength and ability to participate in treatment, social workers help patients and their families identify, mobilize and use their own and community resources. The short-term, multi-faceted work helps patients cope with hospitalization and illness, and facilitates an appropriate discharge plan that meets their care needs.
