You will be expected to work principally with Dr. Adolfo Garcia-Ocana on his project Protein kinase C Zeta, Dextran Sulfate and the pancreatic beta cell".
You will be working on studies analyzing the role of the intracellular signaling target PKC zeta in the beta cell. You will analyze the effect of PKC zeta activation in beta cells in vitro; and determine the intracellular targets and genes modified by this protein in beta cells. You will also examine the role of dextran sulfate in preventing/treating Type I diabetes in mice. To develop these studies, you will use molecular and cellular biology research techniques and experiments will be conducted in continuous beta cell lines and in primary cultures of islet cells from normal, transgenic and knockout mice.
