The Senior Director of Publications and Communications will develop and implement editorial procedures that will ensure consistent editorial standards, brand positioning, and tone for all internally or externally directed publications, both electronic and print. The position would require the candidate to write stories as well as edit and direct stories written by internal staff or freelancers.
The goal of all communications programs is to elevate the visibility and strengthen the reputation of The Mount Sinai Health System and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, while positioning the organization as a top leader in clinical care, education, and scientific research. The Mount Sinai Health System includes: Beth Israel Medical Center, Beth Israel Brooklyn, The Mount Sinai Hospital, Mount Sinai Queens, Roosevelt Hospital, St. Luke's Hospital and New York Eye and Ear Infirmary.
The senior director will also deliver communications on a broad range of clinical or scientific topics, from general consumer health to technical basic and clinical research. The senior director must have a proven track record in science writing and editing and will review, as needed, scientific press releases written by members of the press team. They need to be able to understand complex scientific information, theories and practices which they can translate into a clear, concise and accurate language that can be understood by the general public. The senior director will contribute to and oversee departmental and institutional annual reports, newsletters and brochures.
Reporting to Vice President for Public Relations and Communications on all communications efforts, liaise with Department Chairs and marketing/communications associates to map out content and develop publication outlines for final approval by the VP.
Conduct interviews with scientists, doctors and academics to outline and plan articles and material for publication
Develop, schedule, and manage major publications such as an annual report for the health system and help shape and top edit key publications such as outcomes books for various clinical departments.
Collaborate with Creative Director and departmental communications staff across [clinical/scientific] areas develop schedules for the timely completion of high-quality and highly relevant publications.
Work with Creative Director and designers to develop optimal layouts that feature stunning photographs, infographics, charts, and tables as needed for publications.
Identify distribution lists and channels, as well as optimal placement for printed materials throughout clinical offices.
Track progress and manage schedules for all publications, from content development through distribution. Assign articles as needed, and edit/approve all content prior to review by Departmental Chair and Vice President for Marketing. Work with departmental communications staff to ensure that print goals are met.
Collaborate with web liaisons and digital marketing managers to ensure that language, messaging, and content is up-to-date and reflected across print and digital assets.
Review advertising collateral from Marketing to ensure that language, messaging, and content is up-to-date and reflected across print and advertising assets.
Work with VP of Media and Communications to write/edit or supervising Communications Managers, as needed, on ad-hoc writing projects as they arise such as obituaries, broadcast emails, and press releases.
Work with VP of Media and Communications to oversee editorial process for internal publications; edit and distribute as necessary. Assist in the conversion of publications into Intranet-based publications.
Manage annual revisions of departmental Communications Handbook and companion Style Guide. Make decisive recommendations on any queries regarding departmental style or publications procedure and update guides accordingly.
Assist with writing, editing, and production on large-scale institutional publications.
Write program letters, remarks and speeches for executive leadership
Oversee all editorial content of Mount Sinai as a whole.
Experience and Skills
Ten to fifteen years of editorial leadership experience - progressively responsible experience in communications, marketing or print/electronic publishing with demonstrated success, including a minimum eight years of direct staff management.
Bachelor's degree in communications, public/media relations, marketing or a related field plus excellent, verbal and written skills.
Advanced degree, health-care, science and/or media relations experience is a strong plus, particularly in translating scientific knowledge to a lay audience.
Other qualifications include: demonstrated supervisory experience, fiscal management, and project management, including juggling multiple projects simultaneously in a deadline-driven environment; management experience with vendors and contractors for writing, illustration, photography, and other related supplies and services; excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate and work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures; demonstrated ability to manage people, work effectively with wide variety of people across multiple units and agencies to develop strategies to achieve operating goals; and a commitment to and experience with promoting and enhancing diversity and equity.

Creative team player with ability to prioritize tasks and interact successfully with all levels of staff and stakeholders
Speech writing experience a plus
