Per Diem Blood Bank Technologist
Full/Part Time: Per Diem

Under general supervision of laboratory Director, Blood Bank manager and supervisors, performs and/or assists in performing all serological testing, such as RBC antigen typing, antibody detection tests and immuno-hematological testing in accordance with established departmental policies and procedures. Must validate and verify all testing per quality assurance/CQI standards; reports abnormal variations to supervisors. Receives, labels, processes (fractionates, etc.) and issues blood and blood products, entering requisite data into section computerized system. Receives and accessions patient specimens in accordance with established clinical protocols. Sets up, adjusts, and operates all section equipment. Follows the daily maintenance and quality control procedures in accordance with established Blood bank procedures and regulatory protocols. May be required on occasion to draw blood, in response to patients' needs, as required. Maintains cleanliness of equipment and general working area, and stocking clinical supplies. Ensures proper equipment operation, and reporting of problems to supervisors. Provides support to patient areas serving all age groups via provision of blood products in accordance with quality assurance guidelines and established Blood Bank policies and procedures. Positions call for coverage due to vacations and sick calls for all tours .
-Job requires a minimum level of knowledge acquired through completion of a Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology/Basic Science plus one year of training in Clinical Laboratory. BB ASCP or MT ASCP certification desired, not mandatory.
-Prior work experience of six months is desired in order to gain on-the-job familiarity with Blood Bank techniques. Should be familiar with most major models of Blood Bank equipment. New technologists require a period of thirty days in order to orient themselves to techniques and work area.
-New York State Department of Education Clinical Laboratory Technologist required.
-Good analytical skills necessary for testing and typing of blood with the ability to verify compatibility of blood supplies and identify abnormalities for supervisory follow-up. Must be able to appropriately assess the correct action to take during testing, cognizant of patient wellbeing.
-Good interpersonal manner important during delivery of patient support in order to ensure harmonious provision of blood bank services. Must respond appropriately to inquiries from relevant clinicians.
-Work requires manual dexterity for use of computer keyboard and computerized equipment. Light lifting of clinical supplies may be required. Adequate physical control necessary if required to perform phlebotomy.
