LABORATORY TECHNOLOGIST I
Full/Part Time: Part Time

Under general supervision of laboratory Director, Blood Bank manager and supervisors, performs and/or assists in performing all serological testing, such as RBC antigen typing, antibody detection tests and immuno-hematological testing in accordance with established departmental policies and procedures. Must validate and verify all testing per quality assurance/CQI standards; report abnormal variations to supervisors. Receives, labels, processes (fractionates, etc.) and issue blood and blood products, enter requisite data into section computerized system. Receives and accessions patient specimens in accordance with established clinical protocols. Set up, adjusts, and operates all section equipment. Follows the daily maintenance and quality control procedures in accordance with established Blood bank procedures and regulatory protocols. May be required on occasion to draw blood, in response to patients' needs, as required. Maintains cleanliness of equipment and general working area and stock clinical supplies. Ensures proper equipment operation, and reporting of problems to supervisors. Provides support to patient areas serving all age groups via provision of blood products in accordance with quality assurance guidelines and established Blood Bank policies and procedures.
-Job requires a minimum level of knowledge acquired through a completion of a Bachelors Degree in Medical Technology/basic science plus one year of training in Clinical Laboratory.
-Prior work experience of six months is desired in order to gain on-the-job familiarity with Blood Bank techniques. Should be familiar with most major models of Blood Bank equipment. New technologists require a period of thirty days in order to orient themselves to techniques and work area.
-Current New York State Department of Education Clinical Laboratory Technologist license required. ASCP certification desired but not mandatory.
-Basic familiarity with computerized Blood Bank systems.
-Shift hours will vary, Thursday and Sunday. Applicant must be able to cover holidays, any weekends or as needed by the department.
