Position Located in Branford, CT
The Mount Sinai Genetics Testing Lab located in Branford, Connecticut is a high throughput clinical sequencing facility slated to open in October 2014. As an extension of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, we will utilize state of the art technologies to generate sequence data from clinical samples. These data will be utilized to construct precise biological models that will be used to better diagnose and treat disease



SUMMARY: The Facilities and Safety Officer is responsible for the maintenance and infrastructure of the building and its systems as well as ensuring that safety training is current and procedures are followed for all laboratory and site personnel. Reports to Managing Director, Connecticut Site.

Examples of tasks:

Safety-specific elements
Identify and implement best practices, lead continuous improvement initiatives to reduce work process risks, raise safety awareness, and improve safe work practices
Facilitate a work environment that supports a safe and healthy culture
Conduct or coordinate worker training in areas such as safety requirements and regulations, hazardous material handling and monitoring of chemicals and biologicals, and proper use of personal protection equipment (PPE)
Perform safety audits and inspect facility and safety equipment to ensure safety regulation compliance and identify and correct potential hazards.
Investigate industrial accidents, near-miss incidents, and occupational injuries to determine causes, install preventive measures, and manage return-to-work activities
Coordinate employee safety programs, review program efficacy, establish short and long term strategic safety planning and development
Order and maintain facility safety inventory including supplies and equipment
Work within company policy as outlined in the Mount Sinai Employee Handbook and in alignment with OSHA requirements
Interacts with a variety of regulatory agencies and professionals including OSHA, DOT, EPA and ANSI as well as DOH, CAP or Joint Commission, as applicable
Oversees the safety activities of the laboratory
Oversees annual chemical inventory and obtains MSDS as needed
Maintains current and archived MSDS library
Reviews all laboratory safety policies and creates or modifies policies and procedures as necessary
Coordinates new employee and annual safety training
Enforces daily safety practices
Develops and reviews an annual safety competency for each lab employee
Serves a Laboratory Safety Committee Chair
Conducts laboratory safety committee meetings at least quarterly
Represents the laboratory at the facility's safety committee.
Serves as the Biological Safety and Chemical Hygiene Officer
Coordinates fire drills to attain 100% participation of facility personnel throughout the year
Responsible for developing and maintaining annual budget
Facilities-specific elements
Develops and implements successful strategies to achieve and maintain best in class Facilities Management and works collaboratively with key stakeholders; key service providers, vendors, and leaders within our communities.
Establishes and maintains site master plans.
Establishes and implements short-and-long range organizational goals, objectives, strategic plans, policies, and operational procedures.
Oversees day to day facility maintenance and repair activities
Performs daily examination of site to ensure no visible problems.
Coordinates maintenance activities with external vendors (e.g., HVAC, electrical, plumbing, janitorial services)
First responder to the site for any building alarm/fire call. Late night/weekend work as required
Acts as liaison with Mount Sinai Facilities department.
Develops and manages annual budgets for the organization and performs periodic cost analyses

Job Qualifications:


Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science
Experience in a clinical laboratory facility a plus
Five years' experience in a Safety/Facilities Leadership Role

Physical Requirements:

Lift and turn, up to 30 pounds.
Perform repetitive motion and operate a computer keyboard.
