Job Description:

The Business Development Director (BDD') at Mount Sinai Innovation Partners (MSIP') is a trusted business advisor to our investigators and inventors. The BDD directs the scientific and commercial evaluation of promising new technology disclosures, crafts strategic national and international patent strategies and marketing plans, and actively engages with the commercial marketplace to help ensure that innovative therapeutics, diagnostics, devices and other technologies are made available to our worldwide patient population and become the new standard of care. The BDD reports directly to the Vice President of MSIP, and works collaboratively with the Patent and Contracts team to bring exceptional value to the Health System, the School of Medicine and our commercial partners. The BDD develops strong relationships and networks, influences decisions, thinks strategically and executes good deals to deliver the right asset to the right partner at the right time.

Duties and Responsibilities

Initiates and maintains productive relationships with investigators and inventors at all ranks and may help guide their work.

Directs the final scientific and commercial evaluation of technologies, and makes investment recommendations at the technology Decision Meeting to advance or return technologies.

In close collaboration with the Patent Team, directs the development and execution of the patent strategy.

Directs the evaluation of commercial potential; models and predicts asset value; directs responses to industry RFP's; and develops and maintains productive partnerships with commercial leaders.

Directs the development of technology-specific sales and marketing materials and communications; initiates industry meetings.

Finds the right' commercial partner for a new technology; creates license and contract terms; negotiates and closes deals, especially those with unusual IP language and/or large-scale master agreements.

Partners with internal and external parties to resolve scientific and/or administrative matters.

Performs other related duties as assigned, including: recruiting and developing the Business Development function and team.

Job Qualifications:

Masters of Life Science; PhD, preferred. MBA or JD a plus

7 years of experience in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or academic healthcare sector.

Relevant post-doc work experience may be considered.

Track record of successful negotiations and executed deals

MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Inteum, a plus

Excellent scientific, legal and business skills
Sound judgment and critical thinking
Influence in difficult situations using scientific, legal and/or industry knowledge
Networking, with both internal (MSSM) and external (industry) clients
Expertise in current market conditions and trends for patents and commercial licensing agreements, especially for biomedical inventions
Functions well as a contributor to interdisciplinary groups party-to the protection, evaluation, partnering and commercialization of intellectual property
Proven ability to establish and sustain effective partnerships
Proven ability to develop, manage and motivate a team of direct and dotted line reports
Ability to work in a virtual office setting as well as regular office environment.
