Floor Physician Assistant-Float
The physician assistant is responsible to the Chairman of Orthopaedics or his designee. All duties are performed within the scope of practice of a NYS Physician Assistant. This position involves care on the orthopaedic inpatient floor(s), emergency room and the operating room.
Assess the health status of patients with comprehensive health history and physical examination on new or emergent patients, and during post operative assessments
Initiates appropriate therapeutic laboratory and diagnostic testing and procedures, consultations
Prescribes and manages medication regimens, interprets findings and plans for current care in association with the medical attending and covering resident
Documents findings and plan of care in the patient's medical record
Responds to emergencies on the inpatient unit / PACU
First assistant in the operating room as delegated, enters post operative orders as directed
Attends mandatory discharge planning meetings three times/week to foster continuity of care and completes required referrals and visiting nurse referral forms and/or acute and sub-acute transfer forms
Completes sign out of all patients in the computer, and with the resident on call for continuity of care
Updates documentation for quality indicators, including morality and morbidity monthly reports
Supports the mission, vision philosophy and goals of the department of Orthopaedics and the Medical Center
Answering consultations throughout the hospital for the residents when they are not available and appropriately triaging their care. The PA would then prioritize each consult and forward this information to the covering resident.
Experience: minimum of one to two years of PA experience preferred.
Education: college graduate, graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant Program. National and New York State P.A. certification/registration.
Effort: Must work independently while maintaining confidentiality. Possession of tactfulness, good judgment, attention to detail and guest relations essential. Maintain BCLS, ACLS, infection control, PA certification, recertification and CME
