Spine Physician Assistant
Works clinically under the direct supervision of a physician in the orthopaedic department. All duties are performed within the scope of practice of a NYS Physician Assistant and within written protocol specific to the supervising physician and endorsed by the Chairman of Orthopaedic Surgery.
Orders and interprets appropriate diagnostic studies:
Radiological studies including routine x-ray studies, CT scans, MRI, fluoroscopy studies.
Appropriate consultation with members of the laboratory, radiology and pathology concerning results of ordered studies.
Appropriate consultation and treatment planning of all study results with physicians in practice group.
2. Initiates routine therapies within the guidelines of established protocol. Maintains appropriate therapies for patients, diagnostic work-up for patients, pre-operative patients, post-operative patients.
Initiates referrals to other member of the health care system.
Initiates appropriate referrals to other medical specialties by arranging appointment and patient instructions either by verbal or written communication.
Arranges appropriate transfer of necessary patient medical record information for review by referral specialty.
Obtains reports and recommendations of such referrals either by verbal or written communication.
Review and updates records including all laboratory, radiological and other tests with appropriate reporting to the physician.
Appropriately counsels and educates office patients pre and post operatively re: exercise, medication, all appropriate therapies.
Performs office treatment therapies within the guidelines of written protocol and as having provided medical proficiency of having performed such procedures.
Changes all wound dressings, using proper technique.
Assists with minor surgical procedures done in office setting including injections and minor suturing as indicated by the physician.
Initiates and assists in the management / adjustment of medications with the supervision of the physician.
Communicates with office staff in the coordination of Physician's schedules.
Assists the attending in the Operating Room working with the Orthopaedic residents and Nurses to ensure things run smoothly.
Interacts with the patient, patients' family members, secretary and scheduling staff to ensure appointments are kept, prescriptions are renewed and patients care is well coordinated.
Performs other related and unrelated duties as necessary.
Clinical Qualifications: Medical terminology, one year of experience in a busy physician office practice preferred. New graduates welcome.
Administrative Qualifications: Strong team leadership and communication skills. Able to organize and complete projects simultaneously.
Education: College graduate, graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant Program. New York State P.A. certification and current registration mandatory.
Effort: Coordination of patient care with supervising PA and Physician. Must maintain confidentiality. Possession of tactfulness, good judgement, attention to detail and guest relations essential.
