Responsible for managing and coordinating the daily operations of Release of Information and Data Integrity units. Oversees, monitors and maintains quality control for the confidentiality, security and timely release of health information and the integrity of the legal medical record.
Duties and Responsibilities

Manages and organizes the workflow and operational activities of health information specialists and supervisor as it relates to data integrity for medical records and the accurate and complete provision of medical information to authorized requestors.
Responsible for monitoring quality, productivity, and employee performance. Develops appropriate training and education for HIM staff to ensure medical record documentation and data integrity.
Develops and implements strategies to ensure that records and information are provided in and efficient and timely basis to internal customers (Case Management, Compliance, Patient Financial Services, Patient Service Center, Performance Improvement, Risk Management, clinical and hospital staff ) and to authorized external customers.
Oversees accuracy and timeliness of data integrity activities to ensure that data and duplicate medical record numbers and other master patient index errors are identified and corrected.
Monitors and trends documentation and data integrity issues and provides interdepartmental reports for evaluation and corrective action.
Intervenes, investigates and resolves complaints on all urgent and time sensitive cases. Trends issues to improve performance and processes and train staff as applicable.
Oversees the activity and maintenance of high risk cases to ensure that a complete legal medical record is obtained, secured and released in compliance with federal, state and hospital regulatory requirements.
Develops policies and procedures to ensure quality consistency and efficiency for data integrity, death certificate completion and release of medical information.
Oversees the timely and appropriate completion of electronic death certificates according to hospital policies and procedures and the New York City Department of Health.
Assumes responsibility for HIM operational units, as authorized, in the absence of the Director of Operations.
Interview, recruits, orient, disciplines and terminates staff.
Participates in budget preparation and evaluation.
Communicates, cooperates and maintains good working relationships with administrative, clinical, hospital and departmental staff.
Participates and assists in departmental quality/performance improvement activities.
Adheres and enforces all requirements related to HIPAA and confidentiality, privacy and security of patient records.
Participates in hospital committees and task forces, as designated
Performs various other related duties as may be deemed necessary or as may be directed by immediate supervisor/administrator.
Associate (AS) degree in Health Information Management, or equivalent degree in related health field is required
Bachelor's degree with RHIA certification preferred.
Minimum Related Experience
(e.g. 1 year in research environment)
3 years of progressive HIM and supervisory experience.
Experience coordinating or supervising release of information and master patient index.
Good working knowledge of electronic health records, registration and data systems.
