Introductory Courses

Our three introductory courses, Understanding Birth, Understanding Your Newborn, and Understanding Breastfeeding, provide a comprehensive preparation for childbirth and newborn care. We recommend that you complete all three courses during your prenatal period.

Understanding Birth

Understanding Birth is a series of three classes, held for three consecutive weeks. The three-hour classes will cover pregnancy, labor, comfort and relaxation techniques, medical procedures, cesarean births, and postpartum preparation. Taught by a certified childbirth educator, you will have the opportunity to practice techniques and ask questions throughout this interactive nine-hour course.

Understanding Your Newborn

This two-and-a-half-hour course covers the essentials of newborn care. You will learn about newborn traits and behaviors, sleeping patterns, comfort techniques, diapering, bathing, feeding, and safety, including sudden infant death syndrome guidelines. You will also have the opportunity to practice holding, burping, diapering, and swaddling an infant.

Understanding Breastfeeding

In this two-hour class, a certified lactation consultant will teach you the breastfeeding basics, including how to succeed at breastfeeding, how to stimulate milk production, and how to know when it is time to feed your baby. You will also learn positions for breastfeeding and getting a good latch and expressing milk. The course will also cover breast care and developing a breastfeeding lifestyle.

Additional Courses

Infant Safety and CPR

Our two-and-a-half-hour Infant Safety and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) class covers CPR techniques for infants from birth to one year. An RN and certified CPR instructor will teach you how to recognize choking and what to do if it happens, and demonstrate safe sleep positions for babies. Also addressed is infant and child safety, a review of safety products, burn care, poison control, and when to call 911.
