The kit from the company 23andMe tests for three mutations including BRCA1, and is available without a prescription - though the test has some limitations and it is recommended that the results are confirmed with a doctor. "Everyone always thinks more information is better, but I think it's important to know that these test results can give misinformation as well," said Elisa Port, MD, FACS, associate professor of surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, chief of breast surgery and co-director of the Dubin Breast Center at The Mount Sinai Hospital. If someone tests positive with the kit, Dr. Port recommends "proceeding with caution. Even the FDA is recommending confirming these results."
