One huge influence on patients’ engagement in their care: technology that lets them do everything from run their own electrocardiogram on a smartphone and track medication use from smart pillboxes to hold their own stress-busting mindfulness session. Mobile technologies can put patients managing conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure in the driver’s seat, and even allow for quick diagnosis of routine ailments. “One in two Americans suffers from a chronic disease that requires a certain level of monitoring in addition to seeing a physician periodically,” said Ashish Atreja, MD, MPH, assistant professor of medicine and gastroenterology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, director the the Sinai AppLab, and chief technology innovation and engagement officer for The Mount Sinai Hospital. The Mount Sinai Health System is one of the first medical systems in the country to have its own lab focused on developing mobile medical apps for use by patients.
