This three-part series examines the costs of dealing with aging’s costliest challenge. Over the last five years of life, the average out-of-pocket cost of care for dementia patients totaled $61,500—81% more than for people without dementia—according to a new study in the Annals of Internal Medicine. “The burden is on families to figure out how to pay for it,” says Amy Kelley, MD, MSHS, an associate professor of geriatrics and palliative medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and lead author of the dementia study.
