Greening Mount Sinai Executive Committee

The Greening Mount Sinai Executive Committee is working to transform The Mount Sinai Hospital into a model of environmentally friendly health care – without compromising the care or safety of our patients, employees, and visitors. As one of the country’s leading medical centers, Mount Sinai has always been committed to promoting the health of the community through high quality patient care and teaching. Now, we are committed to fulfilling our mission in an environmentally sustainable manner that is consistent to Mount Sinai's long history of community service and deeply rooted commitment to social concern.

Mount Sinai has been a world leader in environmental medicine for 50 years. Mount Sinai researchers first recognized the links between asbestos and lung cancer. Mount Sinai physicians led the effort to remove lead from gasoline in the U.S. and around the world. Mount Sinai researchers have documented the effects of pesticides, phthalates, and other synthetic chemicals on children's health, and we have led the way in creating evidence-based programs for the prevention of exposures to these toxic chemicals.

Therefore, it is incumbent upon us to take a leadership role in creating safe and sustainable health care practices. We believe that a global, system-wide approach to Greening Mount Sinai will make this happen.

The Greening Mount Sinai Committee meets bi-monthly to discuss goals and share progress updates. By acting cohesively, The Mount Sinai Hospital and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai will be able to reduce the demand on our planet’s resources.
