"Guidelines Needed to Curb Diabetic Retinopathy in Asia"

Despite high rates of sight-threatening diabetic retinopathy (DR), fewer than 25% of Asian countries have DR screening guidelines, researchers say. "This is an excellent survey of the growing problem facing the countries in southeast Asia, where the increase in diabetes and diabetic retinopathy have reached epidemic proportions,” said Richard Rosen, MD, director of retina services at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai. “Since vision loss from diabetic retinopathy affects the working-age population, it’s a major threat to the economic growth and stability of these emerging economies. It needs better management to control the disease and the preventable losses from the visual complications.” Learn more.
