A novel, "less invasive" technique can help clinicians to continuously assess laryngeal and vagus nerve function while patients are under general anesthesia during neurosurgery or otolaryngology procedures, new research suggests. "We were able to find a reflex in the human voice box that has been thought not to exist under anesthesia in humans," said lead author, Catherine Sinclair, MD, assistant clinical professor of otolaryngology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. “Never before have we been able to monitor both sensory and motor branches of the vagus nerve,” Dr. Sinclair added. This ability “is a huge breakthrough and will hopefully translate into improved patient outcomes.”
