In adults with congenital heart disease, traditional atherosclerotic risk factors are associated with coronary artery disease (CAD), but not with ischemic stroke, researchers in the Netherlands suggest. The prevalence of congenital heart disease is rising, and affected patients are living longer – long enough to develop acquired CAD and stroke. Usman Baber, MD, assistant professor of medicine and cardiology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai said, “These are provocative findings suggesting an accentuated role of factors related to cardioembolism, rather than atherosclerosis, in risk for ischemic stroke among adults with congenital heart disease.” However, the lack of information on antecedent atrial fibrillation and relatively few ischemic stroke events warrant a more cautious interpretation, Dr. Baber added. “These results should prompt larger, prospective investigations to elucidate unique factors that contribute to stroke in such patients.”
