"Fluorescing Brain Tumors: Game Changer" - Pat Farnack
The FDA has approved a real game changer in the removal of brain tumors. Costas Hadjipanayis, MD, surgical neuro-oncologist at Mount Sinai Beth Israel and director of neurological oncology for the Mount Sinai Health System said, “This agent called Gleolan is really an amazing agent that we stumbled upon years ago. The way this agent works is it is taken orally and is rapidly absorbed into the blood, and it goes to brain tumors where it’s taken up selectively by the cancer cells and metabolized or chewed up into a new compound, which in turn are what fluorescents or lights up. When we shine a blue light, we get an emission of red light when operating on these types of tumors.” This is a real time visualization agent, the more of the tumor we take out, the overall survival of the patient increases.
