About the Community

As a major medical center with a renowned and highly experienced staff providing advanced, effective care, Mount Sinai attracts and treats patients from all over the city, nation and the world.

Mount Sinai’s local communities reflect a diversity of socioeconomic, racial and ethnic groups, including the predominantly Latino and African-American communities of East Harlem, Central Harlem and the South Bronx; residents of Manhattan’s Upper East Side and Upper West Side and the Hasidic Jewish community of Brooklyn and Rockland County.

The origins of Mount Sinai Hospital are in Jewish philanthropy, and the hospital continues to serve the Jewish community, in particular the specialty care needs of Williamsburg, other Brooklyn communities, and Rockland and other upstate counties.

Residents of East Harlem used more health services at Mount Sinai than residents of any other single community. In 2006, community residents consisted of 15.1 percent of discharges, 27.7 percent of outpatient visits and 40 percent of emergency room visits.
