The Mount Sinai Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit (PEHSU) is a Center of Excellence in Environmental Pediatrics. It was founded in 1999 and has received core support from the beginning through a grant from the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The Mount Sinai PEHSU is a member of a national and international network of PEHSUs. PEHSUs are located across the United States as well as in Canada, Mexico, Argentina and Europe.

Our Mission

The mission of the PEHSU is to provide clinical consultation and education to families, health care professionals, public health officials, and community organizations who have concerns regarding children's environmental health.

We sponsor educational fellowships, research, seminars, and career development at The Mount Sinai Medical Center and throughout Federal Region II, which includes New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The Center serves as the clinical practice for the Mount Sinai Pediatric Environmental Health Fellowship training program, and the Pediatric Environmental Health Elective Program.

New York State Network

To expand clinical services and educational programs in children's environmental health beyond the New York City area, the Mount Sinai PEHSU has worked with the New York State Assembly, the New York State Senate and the New York State Department of Health to build a statewide network of Centers of Excellence in Children's Environmental Health (CECEHs).

This network currently consists of eight Centers of Excellence. The Center at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in Manhattan is co-located with the Mount Sinai PEHSU. The other Centers in the network each serves a region of New York State and are located at:

• School of Medicine at Stony Brook University Medical Center, Stony Brook, Long Island
• University of University of Rochester School of Medicine, Rochester, NY
• University of Buffalo SUNY School of Medicine, Buffalo, NY
• SUNY Upstate Medical University, Syracuse, NY
• Albany Medical College, Albany, NY
• New York Medical College, Westchester County, NY
