Facilities

Hardware

The workstations in the Laboratory of Neuroimaging are Apple and Dell branded hardware running Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux. All have a minimum of two Gigabytes of RAM and 100 Gigabytes of internal hard-drive workspace as well as DVD Writing capacity. The Apple computers are dual processor G5's and the Dell's are single and dual processor Pentium 4 Xeons. All lab workstations have LCD displays ranging from 18" to 20". LN is equipped with an Apple xServe and xServe RAID system to provide file sharing and network home directories. Presently this system provides over four Terabytes of storage capacity and workspace and is easily scalable up to 32 Terabytes. By designing a system based on network home directories users are able to sit at any available workstation without having to worry about project and personal files not being accessible. Server archiving is removable hard drive based and users are able to archive data via CD/DVD or removable hard drive.

Software

Server

Using custom built software the Laboratory of Neuroimaging takes data as it is sent from the MR Scanners and organizes it by project identification making the data readily available to researchers but limiting users to projects they are affiliated with. In addition, scripts to batch process raw data are available to quickly organize data in formats that are easier to analyze in.

Workstations

Given the heterogeneous layout of the lab, LN workstations are capable of running all known image processing/analysis applications providing a complete MR Imaging toolset for our researchers.

All workstations have the following programs:

  • MATLAB: Matrix manipulation and display program.
  • SPM: Statistical image analysis package
  • FSL: Image analysis package
  • xMedcon: File format converter
  • Talairach Daemon Client: Program to map Talairach coordinates to anatomical structures.

Besides this, software installed depends on Operating system used:

Windows

  • MRIcro: Image viewing application
  • BrainVoyager: MR imaging analysis program
  • ePrime : Stimulus creation and presentation program

Linux

  • MRIcro: Image viewing application
  • medX : Tool for viewing and manipulating imaging data

Mac OS X

  • NeuroLens: Image viewing/analysis application
  • Madena X: Image viewing/manipulation program
  • StimulusCreator: Stimulus creation and presentation program
  • OsiriX: Image viewer with 3D rendering
  • Other tools can be made available as needed. Custom tools have been designed to perform a variety of imaging manipulations and analyses and new tools can be created (if they do not already exist) given sufficient demand.
