IPM Clinical aims to play an integral role in the delivery of genome-informed personalized health care. IPM Clinical is expanding interactions with The Center for Clinical Laboratories (CCL) of Mount Sinai Hospital. For example, IPM will support the selection, development, validation and clinical offering of gene-based tests developed by the CCL Division of Translational and Applied Laboratory Medicine. Furthermore, IPM and CCL will foster productive partnerships between the clinical laboratory, basic scientists, clinicians, and industry to develop diagnostic and prognostic laboratory tests and instrumentation, and discover novel disease biomarkers. The Institute will lead efforts to define state-of-the art, cost-effective diagnostic approaches to improve patient care and safety.
Because current education and training curricula for the healthcare workforce are not designed to incorporate principles and practice of genetics and genomics, much stronger basic training in the fundamentals of human genetics will need to be incorporated in training of clinicians, nurses, pharmacists and other caretakers. Plans are underway to develop a Personalized Medicine Education Program for IPM. This program will address educational requirements at undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education, and community levels. Ultimately, clinical utilization of personalized medicine will depend on the knowledge of the subject and the awareness of available tests and treatments by both, providers and patients.
