My research interest lies in studying the genetic components of risk and addiction of substances of abuse. Currently, I am studying the behavioral effects of heroin administration on transgenic mice containing the human A118G mu-opioid receptor gene. This model offers the potential to directly determine a one-to-one correlation between mutation of the receptor and vulnerability to heroin addiction. The sensitivity of these mice to heroin will be measured by well-characterized behavioral paradigms such as drug self-administration and conditioned place preference.
