Our three standout neuroscience departments - Neuroscience, Neurology, and Psychiatry - are all in the top ten national rankings for NIH funding, making us unique among research institutions. Additionally, the integration of neuroscience within established institutes directly related to our research initiatives—specifically the Brain Institute—marks our growth as a central area of excellence for the graduate school, medical school, and clinical programs.

Since its inception, the Department of Psychiatry has recruited and maintained scientists at all levels of translational research and has been ahead of the field with a neuroscience approach to psychiatry, with studies in genetics, molecular and cell biology, gene expression in clinical samples, neuroimaging, neuropsychology, and novel therapeutics.

The rapid growth of neuroscience within Mount Sinai and the establishment of the Brain Institute under the direction of Dr. Eric Nestler made it important for basic neuroscientists and clinical researchers within the Department of Psychiatry to have a collective voice in a collaborative setting to advance research, mentor junior faculty, define strategic areas of growth, and integrate the Brain Institute. For this reason, the Division of Basic Neuroscience, with Dr. Joseph Buxbaum as Division Director, opens up greater opportunity for science and clinical professionals across institutions to collaborate more freely.
